MBA Wine Tasting to Reunite Friends & Benefit Local Children

It takes nearly a year to plan and only one night to raise a glass, and funds, to benefit local children and students.

Kicking off its event calendar with a celebration of spring, the Margate Business Association hosts its annual wine tasting featuring premium wine and craft beer, live and silent auctions.

The 14th annual Margate Business Association Wine Tasting is 6-9 p.m. Wednesday, April 13 at Steve and Cookie’s By The Bay, 9700 Amherst Ave., in Margate. Tickets are $50.

Committee chairwoman Paula Hartman said prizes are coming in and tickets are going out, fast.

“Everybody who comes has a wonderful time and we always have great prizes. There’s something for everyone – fishermen, golfers and we always have beautiful jewelry, a bicycle and a surfboard,” Hartman, of Margate, said. “I love the auction - it's really fun to watch the competition as people stand there and try to be the last bidder.”

Diane Mitchell of 95.1 WAYV's Mike and Diane show will team up with auctioneer Lou Solomon of Margate for the exciting live auction. Owner Cookie Till said new to the menu this year are spirits.

“I’m looking forward to hosting our annual tradition again this year,” said Till. “There are so many interesting spirits being produced – it will be a welcome addition to be able to introduce them alongside a great lineup of wines and craft beers. I have some fun surprises on the menu too."

Proceeds from the event benefit the Margate Business Association’s Daniel and Maria Walters Scholarship program. Each year, the program awards two, $2,500 college scholarships to high school seniors who have attended Margate City schools. More than $83,000 has been awarded to Margate students attending college through this program since its inception in 1999.

Proceeds also benefit the MBA Children’s Fund, which distributes warm clothing, glasses, school supplies to children, sends latch key children to summer camps, and provides food and toys among its services.

“It's a worthwhile cause. I feel very blessed that I am able to help. It's a wonderful and rewarding thing to give back and when you meet the people you helped it makes it more special,” Hartman said. “The funds stay local and help local people who are in real need.”

The MBA thanks its proud donors, sponsors and vendors of this year’s wine tasting including: The Hartman Home Team and 95.1 WAYV, Jagielky's, Formica Bros. Bakery Allied Beverage, Cape May Brewery, Fedway, Polaner, Vine Street Imports, Wildman and Winebow.
